Celebrating 125th year serving the local community

Burley Geach Solicitors celebrates its 125th year serving its local community

October 2026 marks a remarkable milestone for Burley Geach Solicitors as the firm celebrates 125 years of serving local people, families and businesses.

Reaching a 125th anniversary is an achievement few organisations can claim. For Burley Geach, it represents more than simply longevity. It is a testament to generations of clients who have placed their trust in the firm and to the dedicated staff who have helped shape its reputation for providing practical, professional legal advice with a personal touch.

The firm first opened its doors in 1901 with an office in Petersfield. By 1930 the firm also had an office in Haslemere and its third office in Liphook was opened in the 1980s. Unlike our banks (!!), the firm remains present with its offices on our high streets, in our local towns.

Whilst the regulation, technological demands and working practices of today bear little resemblance to the days of quilled handwritten deeds, the firm has remained committed to a simple principle –  being there for local people when they need legal support. Whether helping individuals buy their homes, guiding families through difficult life events or assisting local businesses, Burley Geach has been a constant presence within the communities it serves.

Reflecting on the anniversary, the partners and staff of Burley Geach see the milestone as an opportunity to thank the thousands of clients who have entrusted the firm with their legal matters over the years, as well as the colleagues, past and present, whose professionalism and dedication have contributed to its enduring success.

As the firm marks this significant anniversary, it is particularly fitting to pay tribute to Richard Baylis, whose outstanding service to the firm spanned over 4 decades. During his distinguished career, he represented generations of local people, not only from the firm’s offices but also through his advocacy before the courts. Many will remember Richard appearing in the old Magistrates’ Court in Petersfield, a building that now serves as the town’s museum. His career bridges an era of profound change in legal practice, from traditional courtroom advocacy and paper files to the digital age of modern legal services. Equally respected by clients and colleagues alike, Richard helped guide countless individuals, families and businesses through important moments in their lives while mentoring younger generations of lawyers. Richard’s dedication and leadership embodied the very best traditions of the firm and they are proud to acknowledge the lasting legacy he has woven into its 125 year history.

As Burley Geach celebrates its achievement, it remains proud of its independence and its role as a trusted local service provider. Most importantly, it remains committed to serving the local community at the heart of its story, just as it has done for the past 125 years.
